Breastfeeding Checks

How would you like to send one of these checks out to pay your mortgage?

Thanks to Heather at It's All About the Hat for pointing them out to me. As you can guess, these checks depicting a breastfeeding mother benefit La Leche League International. With every purchase of these checks, address labels and checkbook covers, 10% goes to LLLI.

If breastfeeding is not your cause, Message Products also sells checks that support NOW, Planned Parenthood, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and more.

I love these checks. I'm so glad to have found this website. I've often wondered how many black women breastfeed. I am a member of LLL and we do not have many black mamas at events and meetings. This is such a concern to me. With all the information about breastfeeding being linked to IQ, health, obesity, etc., I feel like, if black children aren't being breastfed that's just one more strike against them, you know? In our city, there is no LLL group in the mostly African American part of town. This seems like a subject that's really being neglected. Anyway, this website is awesome and I love the name. :)

Awesome! We are currently using checks from them that promote HRC and say "Love is never wrong," but I will definitely consider these when we have to restock.

Christina,
I'm so torn about LLL. On the one hand, I know they offer tremendous support to nursing moms and so many of the breastfeeding advocates I call friends are leaders and passionate about the group. On the other hand, it really bothers me that the largest breastfeeding organization in the world does absolutely zip to encourage diversity and reach out to women of color. I know black women who've attempted to attend LLL meetings in very metropolitan areas like NYC and gotten the cold shoulder and made to feel unwelcome.
Why is there no LLL group in the "AA part of town"? LLL is seen by black people as something for only white women and they make zero effort to be inclusive.

I have had these checks for about a year or so. I was so happy to find them. I have had several comments (all positive) around town as I hand them out. One young man asked it it was me... don't think he had looked close enough to see what the image was. :)
It was really neat using one of these checks to pay my final fees to become a LLL leader. Seemed to fit.
As for the comments about LLL including AA women, you are so right that it is an issue! I will personally bring this up to my local area and try to start a dialogue about it locally at least.

Wow, so it really is a problem, not something I'm imagining. I've felt a very strong calling in the last year or two to start a new LLL group in our AA part of town. Only problems are, I'm not a leader yet, I'm an introvert and not sure about leading meetings, and I'm white. :) I am thinking about becoming a leader after I have my second child due in December. I feel like a need another round of BF a newborn to be knowledgeable enough. There's still the whole introvert thing though. My LLL group has an huge number of leaders with a bunch of new ones recently. I wonder if any of them would also feel called to start a new group with me. Thanks for your honesty Elita. Maybe if we get the group going, we can get some AA leaders and things will really take off. The churches in our city are really focusing on racial reconciliation in the past 2 years so the timing is right...
