I had an epidural with both of my babies, along with the support of my mother and my husband, a massage therapist (jealous, anyone? :)). And that worked very well for me both times. I was able to walk all around until labor was well underway, and then I got the epidural when I felt I needed to save some strength. My labors went fast and smooth, and I didn't need any pain relief medication afterwards.

I am glad we have many options these days. That book Easy Labor describes how pain relief during labor was initiated by a sort of women's rights movement. It's interesting how the pendulum swings.Tarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12300756345728053007noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-52550411078329823922008-08-21T10:39:00.000-04:002008-08-21T10:39:00.000-04:00I think most people in this society are totally av...I think most people in this society are totally averse to feeling ANY pain at all. I had my son without drugs and didn't have anything but an ice pack afterward. Yes, I was a bit sore, but it never even crossed my mind to take meds for it. The doctor on call the day I discharged was shocked that I didn't want any pain meds to go home with. I was up and showered shortly after giving birth, emailing pictures of the baby. I ate whatever I wanted and moved about freely. I can't imagine how awful it would've been to be confined to the bed or to feel as if I HAD to be.Elitahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01294923997458681675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-71663163491810099742008-08-21T04:14:00.000-04:002008-08-21T04:14:00.000-04:00I ended up with an emergency T-incision C-section....I ended up with an emergency T-incision C-section... the cord was wrapped around my son's head, he went into distress twice, and (during surgery when the doctor had an internal look) it was found that he just wasn't going to fit anyway, he had to be pulled out breech... and I had such a perfect pregnancy otherwise, o well... I was depressed to end up with a section - but sometimes there is no choice, and I am thankful we both survived.

I was worried about the painkillers too, and only took the minimum dosage.. stretching it out as long as I could. The nurses were willing to work with me. I wanted to refuse altogether - I hurt, but not blindingly so. The doctor reminded me - and I agree/believe it 100% - that your body heals faster when you relieve the pain. He also told me that pain killers would allow me to move, and moving would help relieve the pain faster, naturally. He was right. I was helped out of bed within 12hours of the surgery. I got up and walked. I forced myself up every time they said I could try again. I was off the pain meds in less than 2 days. I was wandering the halls by then too. I got stuck in the hospital for 5 days because my BP was at 141 (which was very high for me) and I was climbing the walls from boredom. I was the only mother at the 'check-out' class who was NOT in a wheelchair. Some had been in as long as I was. I was showered and DRESSED, perky, and I even put on make-up... and I had been the "worst case scenario, bring in the med students in mass tours" patient... but I was also the only mom of the bunch who had been out walking the halls for recovery.

I was very worried about the meds, but my son showed no signs that the drugs were even getting to him. He was alert, etc. I had to have a repeat c-section with my daughter... so much damage was done with the 1st that labor was 'not allowed' for the next. Again, I took the drugs, but only the minimum, and pushed to get up as soon as possible, and more often than they wanted me to. I was off the meds and wanting to go home the next day. They made me stay 3 days though.
So, I agree. Take the drugs when you are in pain.. pain is a sharp feeling... not dull aches, I mean seriously, you just had a baby! Your body is going to be naturally achy, c-section or not! But you should not be hurting so much that you do not want to move. And do move! Even if you feel like the staples will explode and your innards will fall out, they won't. Just do it anyway. I think the movement (which the meds helped me with) truly helped conquer the pain and got me off the meds fast.Conniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03667481504650498976noreply@blogger.com
