Thanks for blogging!

I am white, so the cultural pressures were different. I never had mean comments from friends or family - but there was a lot of surprise and curiousity... I only knew one mom who breastfed and she had a lot of trouble so she wasn't really a role model. There was amazement that I never bought a single container of formula - not one. And jealous AWE that I was not exhausted - I co-slept and fed on demand, we could feed while half asleep. :) I did get some rather shocked looks when I nursed my son as he got bigger (until 2.5yo, and he was a big kid too) but nobody said anything mean. I didn't even get the hostile looks, like I did when we used a harness and leash in crowded malls (People hate that! And you can't explain to everyone that's what HE wanted instead of holding hands!).

I had a pediatrician who told me as early as one year that I should start weaning (my kids started on solids at 6mos, but still nursed)... I just told her flat out what I thought of that and that she should do some research. I still went to her, and she never mentioned it again. She also tried to put my kids on iron supplements when they were the slightest bit 'low' on a blood test. I asked if the children who were sampled to determine the 'proper iron levels' were breastfed or fed iron-packed formula. She couldn't answer that. We didn't do supplements.

The only thing I might add to your suggestion to talking to the lactation consultants in the hospital... is to make sure you get all this contact information BEFORE you go in. Get the number and put it in your cell phone. Same with the head of the department, nursing staff, even the manager at the hospital customer service or advocacy center (or whatever they call it). Talk to your doctor too and have his/her number on hand. It's not nagging, it's speaking up - too many people are afraid to question the all-powerful doctors - but I have found that most good doctors WANT your input. anyway, I've never been in a hospital with an internal phone book handy or an operator that had a clue, be prepared :)

Great post! Wish I could have given you credit over at My Brown Baby.
