We believe its the mother's right to choose how she wishes to nurture her child. Maternal rights are human rights! At Midwife International, we are focused on decreases a rate-- the rate of maternal/infant mortality around the world.

For more information on our efforts to decrease this rate, check out our midwife training.

http://midwifeinternational.org/midwife-training/.

Thanks for all that you do!Midwife Internationalnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-7823787272936051952012-08-11T21:22:33.911-04:002012-08-11T21:22:33.911-04:00I just wrote this whole thing about NJ, and then I...I just wrote this whole thing about NJ, and then I accidentally deleted it! I don't have the energy to write it again. I will say that both times I gave birth in NJ I had a C-section (the second time I was not allowed to even try for a VBAC :( ). Both times I had some horrific experiences with having to demand to be able to breastfeed my child. The first time my son had jaundice, so my dr said I needed to supplement (um...bfing constantly is best for that, but as a first time mom I wasn't arguing with him). My baby son refused the bottle and so then the nurse literally shoved it down his throat, while he was screaming and choking. He ended up spitting it at her (hahaha) and so she gave up and I didn't have to supplement. The second child, I had to fight to breastfeed her in the recovery room. I think it took my husband three or four tries to get her in to see me? It was bad. Then they put her under bili lights (jaundice, again) and would only let me feed her every three hours. I went in to see her one time and she was crying and they kept shoving a paci in her mouth. I knew she was hungry, b/c I was engorged and wanted to feed her, too, so I asked to feed her and they said NO. Seriously. They did. So I did what any mom would do and said that they could either get her out, or I would do it myself. They did what I asked (I was getting kind of loud) and didn't like me very much, but that's not my problem. I'm there to advocate for my daughter and I know bfing her frequently is the best way to get rid of jaundice. I guess I had the energy to write it again after all! Anyway, St. Barnabas (in Livingston, NJ) is pretty controlling of moms and babies in my experience.

In NJ's defense, however, I do see lots of mommies bfing in public. I have breastfed pretty much anywhere that you could bfeed around here and I have never even gotten so much as a dirty look. No problems.

As for Vermont...I love it there. I'm not surprised because there is a strong natural, organic, green living element there and what is more natural, organic, and green than breastfeeding?? :)Montclair Mommynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-72673682015961989812012-08-03T14:00:34.907-04:002012-08-03T14:00:34.907-04:00Aaahh, that makes sense.
