I am currently breastfeeding and looking for information about how to get the nutrients my baby and I need. I would first like to mention, however, that the body produces B12 on its own in the intestines and that probiotics are probably the best way to treat a deficiency :)

http://www.livestrong.com/article/250774-vitamins-produced-by-probiotics/

I hate that every meat-eater's first question is, "Where do you get your protein?" Leafy greens have more protein per calorie than meat does, and then you've got beans, nuts, tofu, tempeh--all of which have lots of protein and fat.

P.S. I love the name of the website, "blacktating". So adorable :DHannahnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-87310655645685473662012-05-19T17:31:51.109-04:002012-05-19T17:31:51.109-04:00This was a great idea to have this post, I never t...This was a great idea to have this post, I never thought of fat being an issue. Im not a vegan, but I kept my baby vegan for a while and use a lot of vegan recipes from time to time. Self care is very important for mama whether vegan or not. I wanted to share that there is only one brand of nutritional yeast lab tested to provide proper vitamin B12 and that's Red Star. However, if that's unavailable or you don't want to use it, there are tons of great quality vitamin B12 (B complex) supplements on the market.

Also, in an exchange with someone earlier they cited a study about vitamin D2 not being as effective as vitamin D3. There are vegan vitamin D3 supplements though, including one from Vitashine.Anayah Rosehttp://twitter.com/anayahrosenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-38661634083656233512012-05-18T20:13:09.428-04:002012-05-18T20:13:09.428-04:00Awesome! I've had so many comments - scratch that, criticisms - about eating the full-fat versions of foods. Even when I remind people I'm growing babies (I'm currently tandem nursing my 2 yo and 2 mo) and that their brains and skin are made of fat, they still tsk tsk at me.KrissyFairhttp://thinkmamathink.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-28301000193501040492012-05-18T20:10:23.310-04:002012-05-18T20:10:23.310-04:00"In my case, taking care of myself meant cons..."In my case, taking care of myself meant constantly being vocal and clear about my needs."Wow. This really struck me. I struggled (and do still) with knowing how to take care of myself, and how to communicate it well to my support system. I think that regardless of your dietary choices, it is a super important lesson that women need to learn as they become mamas. I'm still learning! There has also been lots of research to show that nursing moms who are B12 deficient can cause brain impairment in their babies. Typically we say mom's diet is not a big deal, the milk she makes will be fine, but when you are eliminating all animal products from your diet you really do need to think about these things.Elita @ Blacktatinghttp://www.blacktating.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-89116392109098027482012-05-18T17:42:24.954-04:002012-05-18T17:42:24.954-04:00Thanks so much for this. I am still trying to eat vegan as much as possible and plan to return exclusively after pregnancy/during breastfeeding and that was one of my main concerns.Gemhttp://www.rainbowlens.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-26760813293287371512012-05-18T17:18:02.555-04:002012-05-18T17:18:02.555-04:00This is a great, and important, post! My pituitary system suffered tremendously. I was not good about taking my B or D vitamins. I just kind of blindly thought that I would get everything I needed from my very healthy diet. I had another friend that was also vegan. She did all the things you mentioned here and did great. Me, not so much! I am still recovering and it has been a long road! I wish I would have read this 6 years ago! But it is good to read now!mandinoreply@blogger.com
