For the same reason. People in other countries do "weird" things like cover their heads or faces, stretch their necks, squish their feet, walk around naked from the top up, and apparently breasfeed.

I think that a large part of it is cultural.

I also think that in the case of the refugee on the cover, people in this country have some degree of empathy for her plight. OBVIOUSLY she can't "just pump". OBVIOUSLY she can't find clean water for formula, so that somehow excuses the fact that she's breastfeeding.

Then there's the fact that you can't see the underside of the breast, the baby is covering most of the breast.. It makes it a bit less "graphic" as per our cultural norms.

But yeah, in a lot of ways we've backslid.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-30383260923949795282009-02-26T15:43:00.000-05:002009-02-26T15:43:00.000-05:00First, what a great blog name. It's a shame that breasts, especially black women's breasts, have been so highly sexualized that we can't see them for what they are: a mechanism to feed our babies. Can you imagine a world where nursing wherever, showing whatever, is normal, where "lactation consultant" is not even a real job because you just get help from your mama and your sisters and you can take your baby to work with you and nurse her? I hope I live to see it.Elitahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01294923997458681675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-64291344396983580002009-02-26T12:21:00.000-05:002009-02-26T12:21:00.000-05:00I found your blog through Blogher. I have so many friends of color who did not breastfeed because of cultural views of a woman's sexuality and her breasts and pressure from other women in their family to get back to work.

The pictures are beautiful.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-44391496271017982922009-02-25T16:17:00.000-05:002009-02-25T16:17:00.000-05:00Those photos are just beautiful!!! Its an amazing way that we all unite as women, regardless of any other differences.

Im sad that we seem to be regressing in that way, as a society... dont really understand why, this trend toward blind conservatism.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-13497436384258765662009-02-24T14:47:00.000-05:002009-02-24T14:47:00.000-05:00Thank you, that's exactly what I'D like to know! ...Thank you, that's exactly what I'D like to know! Why are we backsliding? I went to the Asheville Denny's nurse-in Sunday. You wouldn't believe all the ugliness in the comments section of the newspaper's story on it. People calling the mom who led it a TRAMP in capital letters for showing the same amount of skin as the moms in these pictures. Saying we should have our kids taken away from us, and that we have no self-respect. It just makes me sick. I don't have the time or energy to explain to all these fools why they are wrong.

And the pictures are beautiful.Jennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02154415218933660079noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-73350966242996077172009-02-24T03:45:00.000-05:002009-02-24T03:45:00.000-05:00Beautiful photos!
