It is just so hard to blame any mom who quits when there is little to no societal support to continue breastfeeding much past maternity leave. I do not see it a problem that B stopped BFing at 10 weeks, if that was her BF goal. I do think that it kind of sucks for her child, and I do think that most women who have children have a duty to BF their kids because they chose to get pregnant (or at least not be on top of their contraceptive methods.) However.....I still think that even after she has the kid, after she starts lactating, a woman's breasts are still HER body, her own, and it is fully her choice on what to do with that. We need a revolution of culture, laws and practices in the US to support sustained BFing for families, for as Elita keeps pointing out, 3 mos is the average time to stop BFing because that is when women must return to work.... we do NOT need women judging one another over how long they did or did not BF. No matter what infant feeding method or time frame a woman uses with her baby, there will be a horde of people upset at her choice. Lactation and BF is about a relationship between mom and baby and not about other nosy folks.....if only those who judge moms would instead create a supportive community to make extended BF possible for the mamas that want it....IBCLCin2013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-66841054952699828972012-05-25T03:01:09.889-04:002012-05-25T03:01:09.889-04:00It is great to have celebs publicly talk about bre...It is great to have celebs publicly talk about breastfeeding, even if it is short term, and even if it is to "lose weight." In the postpartum unit I work with mostly moms who often not only have little education about BFing (thanks, Alicia Keys for promoting BF education), but who also see BFing as totally un-glamorous, so any plug for BF I can get from a famous woman makes me happy. The low income women who are also often non white deserve to hear BF promoted in some forum, even if it is People mag, if not amid their community of family and friends. (Not to generalize of course, as I also work with a lot of moms of color and low income moms who care deeply about BFing and are amazing at making it work despite lack of support or resources.)IBCLCin2013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-79224689990920457682012-05-05T14:32:55.142-04:002012-05-05T14:32:55.142-04:00Yeah, I blogged about that awful campaign. http://...Yeah, I blogged about that awful campaign. http://www.blacktating.com/2010/09/new-ny-breastfeeding-campaign-effective.html I've since changed my mind a bit about the promotion of breastfeeding as easy weight loss. As a CLC, it ...I couldn't have said it better. As a CLC, it makes me sad because breastfeeding for such a short time can only mean one of two things: that she didn't have the support necessary to continue despite a desire to do so, or that she didn't have adequate access to information about why breastfeeding is so important. I hope that she is happy and satisfied with her breastfeeding experience and that she stopped breastfeeding by choice, even though that choice would make me sad it's clearly the best possible scenario.

All this talk about breastfeeding for weight loss reminds me of a campaign that the NY DOH did a couple of years ago promoting breastfeeding as a method of weight loss. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjoWWUYDKQM It always rubbed me the wrong way, because I see weight loss as a secondary (or even tertiary) benefit of breastfeeding and I was concerned that if breastfeeding became challenging it would be easy to stop if you were only doing it to lose weight. If you're breastfeeding for your baby's health, it's a lot more motivating to work through challenges.Amber @ Au Coeurhttp://www.amber-hinds.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-83680582652745040382012-05-04T19:18:17.311-04:002012-05-04T19:18:17.311-04:00Nope, you sure don't ;)Nope, you sure don't ;)Elita @ Blacktatinghttp://www.blacktating.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-73322911614062146192012-05-04T06:44:44.311-04:002012-05-04T06:44:44.311-04:00At least she did it for 10 weeks . . . The thing is, in our society this idea and privilege of "choice" has now invaded what is deemed to be BEST for even our most innocent little ones. Why do we make the *choice* not to drink while pregnant? Because we know it is not healthy for baby. Maybe it was a tough decision that she was balancing against other things? The clip talks about her new diet which sounds terribly restrictive and perhaps not enough calories for a nursing mom. I know that if she quit nursing to lose more weight and get back to her career some might judge her, but no one is judging Jay-Z and he is able to go back to his career without any critical eyes on what he's doing regarding feeding. Even if she felt she wanted to go back to her career full force (including dropping weight drastically) it still might have been a hard choice for her?
