People don't understand how much impact they can have on someone - especially in a vulnerable situation like breastfeeding in public.Stay At Home Momologueshttp://www.stayathomemomologues.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-87872364477982172662009-06-01T12:21:12.463-04:002009-06-01T12:21:12.463-04:00I loved this story. I think the larger society is more accepting/supportive of it than we may give them credit for.Yakinihttp://www.prissymommy.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-58471762002902196322009-05-29T08:30:20.829-04:002009-05-29T08:30:20.829-04:00I always try to give an encouraging smile to new m...I always try to give an encouraging smile to new mums I see when out and about - thanks for the reminder of why it's so important.Larahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02360034185798990926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-67538338029945325412009-05-27T20:53:29.391-04:002009-05-27T20:53:29.391-04:00That's awesome that you were encouraged by that wo...That's awesome that you were encouraged by that woman!

I wasn't sure what I would think about nursing in public. I had seen one woman nurse with a cover before, and I thought that's what I was supposed to do.

My baby was born just before Christmas, and on Christmas morning at my in-laws', I opened a present from my MIL - a black cape-looking thing. I thought, great! A nursing cover!

Well, I tried to use it exactly once. Between having an extremely sensitive baby who could not bear to have anything (even me!) touching her while nursing, and feeling like I was wearing a mourning shroud, I decided right then that I would just figure out how to make it work without it. I stuck it in a drawer and never pulled it back out again.

Now on my second baby, and still nursing at 11 months, I have no qualms nursing any time, anywhere. I don't use a cover b/c I feel like I draw even more attention to myself draping myself with a shawl. And besides, I don't need to feel ashamed for doing what comes naturally.

Leslie - I am absolutely mortified that you are shuttled away to another room in your own house to nurse. 1) Kudos to you for continuing to nurse in the face of opposition! 2) Stand up for yourself woman! It's your house, your body, your baby. I can understand not wanting to nurse in the middle of WalMart, but IT'S YOUR HOUSE for pete's sake!! I can only assume since you have a child, your husband has seen your breasts at least once, right? It is just really not cool.Emilyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02377101567280185610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-33227226439988074432009-05-27T20:33:34.020-04:002009-05-27T20:33:34.020-04:00Thank you for the wonderful reminder that not ever...Thank you for the wonderful reminder that not everyone feels the way I do! I often forget how hard it is when you a new mom and you aren't yet at ease with everything. In some communities it takes a lot of boldness to breastfeed in public.
The next time I see a mom nursing out and about, I will take whatever opportunity I have to encourage her, so she knows she's not alone.BarelyKnitTogetherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08792388328301999674noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-11035046247501944202009-05-27T20:17:49.408-04:002009-05-27T20:17:49.408-04:00Your story brought tears to my eyes! I remember our first pediatrician visit too, wanting to nurse my little one and my HUSBAND, yes, my HUSBAND saying, "You're not going to do THAT here!" with the most horrified look on his face. He insisted that we wait until we were shown to a room and then I had to quickly cover up when the DOCTOR, yes the DOCTOR came in. You can imagine how things went from there. When we have company, I am banished to another room to nurse in my own home. I had never seen another mom nurse until a new play group a few weeks ago when a mom nursed a one year old right in the middle of story time. I thought that it was WONDERFUL. I think that you are doing a service every time you nurse in public- the more people see it the less surprising it will be and we can all just get on with our lives. Thanks for the story!Jamiehttp://suddenlystayathome.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-71905858402879887632009-05-27T15:29:49.110-04:002009-05-27T15:29:49.110-04:00This is a great story!
