Women without good employment contracts and offices as workplaces might not be able to combine breastfeeding and work. I think that this comic neglects these realities.

Furthermore, the price of formula is arbitrary. Women pay so much for it because the companies set the prices to gauge these women but there seem to be few activists interested in the plight of formula-feeders. In Germany where I lived during my first birth the price of formula was only a fraction of what I later had to pay in Seattle (not mentioning all the money I wasted on herbs, alternative medicine, breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies to try to supplement with some breastmilk). Interestingly, Germany's breastfeeding rates are above 90%. 3 years maternity leave.betterworld4momsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-38824731607164243122011-07-19T16:48:59.436-04:002011-07-19T16:48:59.436-04:00I didn't have to reduce my job or quit in orde...I didn't have to reduce my job or quit in order to breastfeed. While I do agree we need paid paternal leave, sooner rather than later, many women continue to breastfeed once they return to work. If we are talking the cumulative lifetime savings of having a healthier baby, my guess is it's higher.

I know plenty of well off women who were SAHM and chose not to breastfeed, I also know poor moms who've made it work under difficult circumstances. Not sure where you are but in the US, the poorest women can get free formula through WIC.

----- Reply message -----Elita @ Blacktatinghttp://www.blacktating.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-16097322665328841502011-07-19T16:06:30.946-04:002011-07-19T16:06:30.946-04:00Sorry, don't like this comic. Then the comic should read "breastfeeding put me $10,000 in the hole and caused eviction: support realistic maternity leaves and rights for women so breastfeeding doesn't have to be too expensive!"

In addition this comic would make any woman who chooses formula look like she must be rolling in the dough when really she's probably near destitute, has no job benefits, and therefore can't afford to breastfeed.betterworld4momsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-26877772424680428222011-06-08T14:52:37.549-04:002011-06-08T14:52:37.549-04:00Love it!
