That will make formula feeding pretty devastating for the baby.

The main reason for not liking the advert that the American Red Cross have put up is, as Elita says, the subliminal message that breastfeeding will not be sustainable. Of COURSE we want babies to be fed. The original blog post talks about Japan being a predominately breastfeeding culture. Wet nurses, donor milk etc could be made available and would be infinitely safer than formula feeding (see radioactive water comment as an example).

This isn't about attacking The American Red Cross. It's about wisdom in imagery.

It is a sad fact that the Industrial Milk companies flood devastated countries with their product. Too many times have a breastfeeding nation seen a fall in breastfeeding rates because of the "life saving" industrial milk.

As to the babies that have never breastfed, well what's needed is access to safe water and the right information for making up the milk.

(sorry for my delayed reply... I've only just caught up properly with the blog).

Mars xxMammydoulahttp://www.doula-lly.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-27135783755054989122011-03-20T20:33:42.263-04:002011-03-20T20:33:42.263-04:00Elita, I am looking into this to find more details...Elita, I am looking into this to find more details....not an easy search! It explains it all. Let's be honest, it's sad but many of the babies with no access to breastmilk will be dead before help arrives. The ones that survive will need formula if there is no one to wet nurse them. But the reality is, way more formula arrives than would ever be necessary for the small number of infants who need it. And then what happens to these babies once the aid workers leave? The best way to save lives is to protect breastfeeding. If there is information about this I would be glad to read, as this would do a great disservice to these infants. I'm a nursing mom and I know that breast milk is BEST, but...we have to think about protecting the lives of infants and if formula is the way to do it, than I am for it!Chantilly Patiñohttp://www.biculturalmom.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-40820637765044498722011-03-18T07:43:42.550-04:002011-03-18T07:43:42.550-04:00Did you read the post or the links? It is a proven fact that disasters bring tons of formula donations (way more than what would ever be necessary for infants left without a mother), nursing mothers stop breastfeeding and babies who would have otherwise thrived on breast milk get sick and die. The Red Cross is using American symbolism (breastfeeding is the norm in Japan) to solicit donations. This image will encourage formula donations which are dangerous. What they need to be doing is protecting breastfeeding. I don't see how you can look at this image and think it's a good thing.

----- Reply message -----Elita @ Blacktatinghttp://www.blacktating.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-2113934864592422602011-03-18T01:08:48.885-04:002011-03-18T01:08:48.885-04:00I am a HUGE lactovist and support breastfeeding an...I am a HUGE lactovist and support breastfeeding and do still breastfeed my 18mo old. However, babies still need to eat to survive. What do you propose that those babies who have lost their mothers do? Die? Or what about those who were never breastfed and don't know how to breastfeed?mommaof3lovesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-33465153785122562502011-03-17T22:16:44.969-04:002011-03-17T22:16:44.969-04:00I think it's absurd to attack an organization ...I think it's absurd to attack an organization such as the Red Cross at a time like this over an advertisement they are using to solicit donations during one of this centuries most horrific disasters. Do you not realize the amount of babies left without mothers who are able to be there to breast feed? I am a breast-feeding mom, and I fully understand the benefits, but I would never take it so far as to attack the Red Cross over an advertisement. Did you stop to think of the lives that have been saved/helped because of the Red Cross and the donations it has received?sunnybughttp://pulse.yahoo.com/_QJZJO3XUCOKZI7ORRFSW6MTYLYnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-27879077092720728412011-03-17T18:11:59.000-04:002011-03-17T18:11:59.000-04:00Right ON. And it gives the idea that donating formula would be a good idea - which is isn't, of course - money is *always* the way to go so they can figure out what is most needed.

If they want to show images of saving babies, I would love to see Red Cross feeding, sheltering, and keeping warm a breastfeeding mother. How powerful that would be - you save two lives that way!ContentedlyCrunchynoreply@blogger.com
