You can also use natural remedies, like sage and cold cabbage leaves. Was your baby weaned abruptly? This is probably what caused your breasts to remain engorged. I think there was probably another route to helping to dry up your milk in a way that would have been comfortable for you and your baby, but I wasn't there and I'm not a doctor.Elitahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01294923997458681675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-88847465026731096972009-09-22T11:39:00.314-04:002009-09-22T11:39:00.314-04:00I was a DD cup before i got pregnant. I breasfed my baby for 11 months - exclusively for 6. to my surprise when i stoped feeding him my breasts swelled up to twice its normal size, i could not get up for 3 days.i was in pain. eventually i had to see a doctor who prescibed a drug for me to dry up the milk. Am i right or wrong?olutosinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-62266426880938676682009-05-01T01:03:00.000-04:002009-05-01T01:03:00.000-04:00The pressure doesn't necessarily come from the doc...The pressure doesn't necessarily come from the doctors themselves. Women meet with lactation consultants within hours of giving birth - whether they want to or not.

Women who choose (or must) use a bottle are verbally reprimanded in stores by over zealous breast police. Motherhood is filled with so many pitfalls - having some strange lady scream at me about poisoning my baby because I'm buying a can of formula shouldn't be one of them. (And I wish I could say that was a one time, freak occurrence.)

I had a preemie, and we had to mix breastmilk with formula to increase the calorie content for the first few months. After she was big enough I was able to do straight nursing.

I realize zealots are everywhere - religion, food, medicine - but parenting is such a personal thing. It feels like such an attack if you go against what is currently considered mainstream. Women who breastfed in the '70s dealt with the same backlash that women who bottlefeed now deal with.

It's rough out there.K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13690715465688872007noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-12098559943963058472009-04-30T20:40:00.000-04:002009-04-30T20:40:00.000-04:00Jerise, thanks for the comment. It used to be routine that women were given drugs to dry up their milk, but the practice has been stopped. If you go to your pediatrician or obstetrician and say that you're not going to nurse, they'll tell you to use natural remedies. It may take longer, but at least you don't have to worry about lung damage!

K, I understand that some people don't enjoy nursing or don't want to nurse. That is your opinion or your choice, and it's valid. However, it seems extreme to me to use potentially harmful drugs to dry up your milk. As far as the pressure to breastfeed, does every medical recommendation feel like pressure to you? I can't turn on the TV or radio without hearing about how I need to cut the trans fat out of my diet and exercise at least three times a week. If you went to your doctor and said you were a smoker, wouldn't they recommend that you quit? This is what physicians do: recommend a course of action that yields the healthiest results. Breastfeeding is the healthiest option for moms and babies. Why is a doctor stating this fact "pressure"?Elitahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01294923997458681675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-16194123264923441042009-04-30T19:58:00.000-04:002009-04-30T19:58:00.000-04:00Hello,

Much work is to be done.

Anyway, I have heard about this not only in the UK but in America as well. A friend of mine works in a HIV clinic and she gets calls all the time from women looking to "dry up" quick, fast and in a hurry. Some of these women have had the baby within a few days.

HIV medications are incredibly strong and very dangerous if mis-used. There are other natural, herbal ways of drying up milk - I don't get why these women are going to THAT extreme.

Anyway, great blog.

_JeriseHuemanityhttp://huemanity.typepad.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-44534521615521339032009-04-30T11:13:00.000-04:002009-04-30T11:13:00.000-04:00There is so much pressure to breastfeed, though. ...There is so much pressure to breastfeed, though. I breastfed for six months - and hated every minute of it. I used lactation consultants; I talked to my doctor; I did everything I was "supposed" to do. I just didn't like it.

I'd be very surprised if these women didn't know the current thoughts of the medical community on breastfeeding versus bottlefeeding. It's everywhere.

They made an informed decision that was right for them and their families. I don't think anyone has the right or "duty" to inform them that their choice is wrong.

When I finally tried to stop nursing it took over a month for my milk to dry up. It's now been 4 months and I still leak in the shower. Given a choice - the drugs sound like a pretty good choice to me.K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13690715465688872007noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-83992174084816514622009-04-29T22:23:00.000-04:002009-04-29T22:23:00.000-04:00Wow. Also met a bunch of idiots like the one quoted that think they are gods - don't you dare question me! - just because they somehow made it through med school. That's nationalized health care for you... you get a doctor like that, and guess what... that's the doctor you get. period.Conniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03667481504650498976noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-79313895437541144502009-04-28T19:32:00.000-04:002009-04-28T19:32:00.000-04:00I believe it is about the weight loss, although no...I believe it is about the weight loss, although no one will come out and say, because how shallow is that? The sad thing is, the weight gained during pregancy is shed more effeciently over time while nursing. My baby is six months old and I've lost all my weight without trying. By the time I am done (if baby wants to nurse for a year or more) I will most likely have lost even more. I think women are lazy and want a quick fix. Believe me, I sure wanted to be able to wear my regular clothes but I had to be patient. It'll happen, in time.Organic Gardening Girl Gardenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09265894432724176954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3536683374417960813.post-42485761753713358742009-04-28T17:52:00.000-04:002009-04-28T17:52:00.000-04:00Wow - entirely aside from the question of whether ...Wow - entirely aside from the question of whether a baby's need for breastmilk outweighs a mother's desire not to "use her breasts" for that purpose, there's no reason at all to use powerful pharmaceuticals for this purpose. Breast binding and some simple herbal remedies will do the trick nicely... but perhaps it's really about the weight loss?Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10758670929839461544noreply@blogger.com
